Hector’s Dolphins Escort @SeaShepherd Southward for #OperationZeroTolerance

The crew of the Brigitte Bardot got the perfect send off from Aotearoa yesterday. A pod of rare Hector’s dolphins met the crew off Timaru, New Zealand. A few of the crew swam with them and the dolphins followed the Sea Shepherd vessel for most of the afternoon as the Brigitte Bardot headed south towards Antarctica. The population of these beautiful creatures has declined 70% since 1970. Sea Shepherd applauds former Sea Shepherd crewmembers Dave Rastovich and Howie Cooke and the efforts of Surfers for Cetaceans in their campaign to save the Maui dolphins of New Zealand. The Maui dolphin is the smallest and rarest dolphin in the world and is a sub species of the Hector’s dolphins. There are only about 55 Maui dolphins left in the wild. There are an estimated 7,270 Hector’s dolphins surviving from a population estimated at 26,000 three decades ago. The Brigitte Bardot joined up with the Sea Shepherd ships Steve Irwin and Bob Barker and all three ships are now south of New Zealand leaving the Roaring Forties and heading into the turbulent seas of the Furious Fifties. The fourth Sea Shepherd ship Sam Simon is scheduled to depart from Hobart on July 8th for Antarctica.
