As the sister of an incredibly bright young man who happens to be entering his first year of high school, I'm going to take this one step further and say this:
Kids are not bullied just because they don't have "cute" clothes, they aren't considered "pretty", or popular, or because they're "shy". Kids are simply bullied. So yes, I encourage you to use your voice if you witness a bully, but I also want to take a second to acknowledge that if you are someone who is being bullied, it doesn't mean there's something wrong with you. Kids will find a way to dissect and criticize one another without any reason other than fear. Fear of what they don't understand, what they feel threatened by, and fear of what is different. So be different. And stand tall. Just because kids have been brought up to believe that is an acceptable part of growing up as they figure who they themselves are, does not mean we can't shine a light on what a huge issue this is and put a stop to it.
