Mile 5 of my #WeRunDC #nikewomenshalf marathon is dedicated to the #PowerLatina ACTIVIST!! This #Latina doesn't run from the possibility of danger, she takes risks & uses her voice whenever AND however possible to incite CHANGE!! Even when the darkest times fall upon a cause, SHE will be the light & prove just how far one voice can carry!! Shout out to the OG Power Latina & mentor, @doloreshuerta, the creator of the #SiSePuede slogan & co-Founder of #UFW! While Cesar Chavez popularized it, it is Dolores who created it! Mad respect to #HelenChavez, who helped her husband and Dolores lead the way to change and equality for farm workers in the US! Shout out to Maria Rebecca Latigo de Hernandez (1896-1986) who was a #civilrights activist till the very end! She worked for the improvement of civic, educational, and economic opportunity for the Mexican-American community. She protested and wrote against the segregated and inferior education #MexicanAmerican children received during a time when being a "good lady" meant keeping your mouth shut! And a special shout out @yoanisanchez, who has risked her life to express her freedom of speech! This Cuban #activist has used her blog & social media to share her critical portrayal of life in Cuba. In 2008, Time magazine listed her as one of the World's 100 Most Influential people!! These are just some of the #Latinas who have successfully defied the odds & brought a spotlight to an otherwise ignored cause! #RunLizzaRun #Nike #PowerLatinasRun
