In the autumn of 2011 my 8 year old son, Robert, was going through a bit of a rough time at primary school. He was unhappy, had been bullied and was not engaging with school. Robert is a bright lad but had fallen behind with his written work and to some extent his reading. He told me he felt stupid. I told him that nothing could be further from the truth. But, I felt that he needed encouragement from someone else, someone who does something Robert loves.

One thing Robert loves is comics, especially Marvel comics and superheroes. He draws his own heroes and Marvel heroes, writing stories for them as he goes along. His favorites are Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Iron Man and of course the Hulk and X-Men. His hero is the guy who helped create them all, the great Stan Lee.

Robert's school work was not going very well; I'm not surprised because he wasn't happy at school. So, I contacted POW! Entertainment in California, USA. I asked if one of their writers could email Robert to give him some encouragement. I thought a letter from a real comic book writer would help Robert realize he wasn't dumb, he was just going through a bad patch.

What happened next was truly amazing and incredible.

Darren Passarello (AKA Nitro G), wrote a brilliant, heartfelt letter of encouragement to Robert. Robert was so happy to receive this letter from Darren. It really boosted Robert's confidence. To say thank you, Robert wrote an email back to Darren and sent Darren a drawing of his character, Nitro G.

However, POW's generosity and kindness had only just started:

A week or so later a letter came for Robert from California, USA. Robert was puzzled by this and he opened it. What it contained was amazing. Robert had been sent a Limited Edition Amazing Spiderman from Stan Lee Himself. He had signed it Robert personally.

I was truly amazed that such busy people could take the time to help my lad. I am eternally grateful to both Stan and Darren and all at POW!.

To say thanks Robert drew a brilliant photo of Darren's character "Nitro-G" and sent photographs to POW! Entertainment to Darren and Stan Lee. POW told us how Stan printed off the photo Robert sent and put it up on the wall in the POW! Office. Not a bad achievement for an 8 year old comic book fan from Derby England.

I never expected Stan, Darren and POW to do all they did for Robert. It made him such a happy little boy. As his dad those big beautiful smiles on his face the day he got the email from Darren and the signed comic from Stan were priceless and something I will always remember.

Robert said it felt really good to get the email from Darren and the gift from Stan.

And now a few words from Robert:

Dear Stan and Darren.

thank you for making me feel important. It feels like I have got really important friends and I do.

Your emails encouraged me. It was so nice I felt I was going to explode. I think I now have a superpower of super strength and I will use that to do better at school.

Thank you for my gift. It was like my early birthday present because my birthday is in November.

Thank you for your kindness
