Tell Ryan Keely you like this

December 23, 2012Picard is a grocery store that only sells frozen foods and it’s HUGE in France, home of the original food snob. Weird right? I wasn’t convinced, but as I’m not working while I’m in school, a good meal for a great price is very appealing.

I was in a shared apartment, which meant that besides roommates, I also had a pretty big dining area, so it was voted that the Picard experiment would happen at chez moi. I collected ten euros per guest and set off to do my shopping. It really is an entire shop of nothing but frozen food.

At home I am familiar with the awesome of the Trader Joe’s frozen food section which is pretty good, but nothing had prepared me for the delicious and gourmet options availible. After two laps around the store and much deliberation I settled on escargot, game hen (I think) with mushrooms in a truffle sauce, veg and macaroons. I also picked up two baguettes from the boulangerie for the escargot.

There was no drama, everything heated, served and was delicious. A miracle considering the reduced quality of our stove and fire hazard of a portable oven (it literally burns or melts something every time we use it, frequently my fingers). Even the escargot was good. I was sure they were going to suck, it was the shit test of the whole Picard experiment. And they were perfect and yummy. No one got sick, a miracle because between the five of us we ate well over half the box…well almost the whole box.

Dinner was really good, creamy and rich and the macaroons were so tasty that by the time a grabbed my camera the tray was nearly finished. Picard, I am going to miss you. There is no other way that I could’ve had that meal for only less than 15 bucks per person. Total bill was 62.02 euros, which was split five ways and Toni brought a box of rice to soak op the amazing creamy truffle sauce. Tres genial non?
