Dancing with the Stars recently added a new professional dancer to their roster: Australia native Peta Murgatroyd who comes with an impressive pedigree. Born in Auckland, New Zealand and raised in Perth, Australia, Peta has been dancing since the age of four. Her intensive training started with classic ballet where she studied for 12 years under one of the renowned Kirov Ballet’s former principal dancers, Madame Lubov Nikonorenko. She added to her dance repertoire with training in contemporary and Spanish dance. Since beginning ballroom dancing, she quickly became an Australian State Champion with three months which lead her to move to London to further her burgeoning career.
Among her myriad international competitions, she finished 2nd in the Great World City Championships, was a semi-finalist in the Lion City Championships in Singapore and was a finalist in the Australian Open Championships. Peta’s most memorable success was being placed 3rd in the world in the British Youth Latin Championships in Blackpool 2006. She was also chosen to be a cast member of the worldwide sensation, Burn the Floor, which has sold over four million tickets in over 30 countries. Peta toured the world with the show for six years and then landed on Broadway in August 2009 where she was the lead female dancer. After achieving her lifelong goal of performing on Broadway, she ended her run with the production to pursue a career in television and film.
In addition to performing on Dancing with the Stars in the U.S. and Australia, she has performed on So You Think You Can Dance in Australia and Holland. A talented choreographer as well, she has worked and performed with a diverse roster of artists including Heart, Rod Stewart and Enrique Iglesisas, to name a few. She also toured with the ballroom dancing company Ballroom with a Twist in 2010 for their Canadian tour.
With Peta’s profile growing in the U.S. she has graced the cover of Pilates Style magazine and been featured in OK! and Star magazines. Currently, she is the face and body of South Seas Tan which also serves as the exclusive tanning company of Dancing with the Stars. Her primary charitable concern is breast cancer awareness (her mom is a survivor) and she has supported the Susan G. Komen Foundation with their Inspiration Awards.
