Here's another drawing I did for the series "If Cowboys Were Smaller" for
The Believer Magazine, but this one wasn't used. You have to look closely to see the little saddle.

This is one in a series of drawings I did for this month's Believer Magazine by McSweeney's. The series is titled, "If Cowboys Were Smaller." I think tiny cowboys would do pretty well riding armadillos as long as they didn't try to cross the road on one.

Video of Mexican Free-tailed Bats emerging from Bracken Cave. There's over 20 million in this cave, making it the largest bat colony in the world. It takes four hours for them to stream out like this. Before the night is over they will eat 200 TONS of bugs.

Saw this is in a tiny, roadside graveyard out in West Texas. Has something to do with why Texans think they're a little tougher than others.

Everything I know about horny toads I learned from a big jar at the Texas Natural Science Center at UT. Also from friends at the Horned Lizard Conservation Society. (It's a real thing.) I'd love to put this jar on a gas station counter right next to the pickled pig's feet.

Until you sit down to draw a horny toad, you don’t realize that you don't know what a horny toad's left rear leg looks like. It looks like this.

All three puppies doing what they do best. Actually, second best. They're also quite adept at "business."

DIFFEE CARTOON CAPTION CONTEST #8. This is a cartoon of mine from a few years ago. If you know the original caption, please don't give it away. You can submit your caption ideas as a comment below and vote for your favorites by hitting the "like" button. I'll consider those votes when I chose a winner at noon on Friday. The winner gets this drawing in the mail. Also, this will be the last one of these for a little while. I'm going on vacation to a place where they don't have the internet.

Here's my original caption for that caption contest cartoon. It's a little dark. What can I say? I'm a big dog lover, meaning I love big dogs, even medium-sized dogs. I'm not crazy about the little yappy ones, especially chihuahuas. Guess I could have made the falconers going after chihuahuas instead, but "chihuahua" isn't as funny as "wiener dog." That's just a comedy fact. Some of you out there might question my spelling of wiener dog, but I checked and this is correct. When it's a dog or a meat product it's "ie." It's only "ei" when it's a pervy politician.

CAPTION CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED: We had a little glitch in the facebook commenting functionality this week. Sorry for any hassles that caused. I’ll post the winner along with their caption here, then “like” and comment on other captions back at the original post. And now, without further ado, the winner of this week’s Diffee Caption Contest is: Charles R Humphrey III who wrote this caption: "George, you haven't found it after all these years! Those damn glasses are not going to help."
Thanks for playing, Everybody. I’ll post my original caption later today and we’ll do another one of these in a few weeks when I return from vacation. YeeHaw!

Here's the original jokey book title I had for this week's caption contest image. At an earlier point I had the dummy reading "Dianetics." I still think that's kind of funny but it doesn't have the double meaning that this title does.

I doodled a dude while I was on the phone. He looks like he might be an aging poet or maybe a guy who teaches theater movement at the local community college. Old guy with a young guy's haircut. Kinda sad. He seems a little bitter and probably difficult to please. He needs a name. Any ideas?

This week's Diffee cartoon caption contest winner... sheesh, tough decision. The best bunch of gags yet. The three that made me smile the most were… “Good news! Your prostate looks great!” by Jess Purviance. “Says here you’re complaining of a splitting headache.” By Craig Baldo and “Lay off the greasy foods and drink plenty of fluids.” By Daniel Carlton. But the winner, as much for this caption as for showing consistent quality over several of the last few weeks is… Jess Purviance! Special mention goes out to Chris Seats for another solid showing, Barry L. Edward who had one good one and at least one bad one (Ha), Jon McLachlan with the unique "vital organ" take, Alvaro Baeza (feller bunchers? Is that a thing?), and Chris Bulock, and Herbert Longtry who handled the “oblivious Doctor” angle in two different, but equally good ways (you gotta love a Pontiac Fiero reference) Thanks for playing, everyone! I’ll post my original caption for this one tomorrow.
