SWITCHED AT BIRTH star Katie Leclerc is the lead of the #1 ABC Family drama series. Katie plays the deaf role of ‘Daphne,’ which earned her a Teen Choice Award nomination for “Breakout Star.” The show itself was nominated for five, is the biggest premiere in the history of the ABC Family and currently the #2 show on cable with women 18-34. The first half of Season 1 was released on DVD December 1st – the show returned on January 3rd and was rated the night’s #1 Scripted Cable Telecast. The finale will air Tuesday, March 20th.
Leclerc was recently seen guest-starring on CBS’ BIG BANG THEORY as a deaf friend of Penny’s who hits it off with Raj, which aired on October 6th to record #’s: http://www.tvline.com/2011/10/big-bang-theory-season-5-episode-4-leclerc/. Katie was also on a panel at the White House Anti-Bullying Summit in Washington DC with Tyler Blackburn (PRETTY LITTLE LIARS) along with SEVENTEEN Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Ann Shoket, speaking about her own personal bullying stories along with Delete Digital Drama campaign work to stop cyber-bullying. Katie and her co-star were also special guests for this year’s MTV’s NYE in NYC.
Leclerc learned American Sign Language in high school, only to find out later at age 20 that she has Meniere’s disease: while she is not deaf, she is “hard of hearing” (an inner ear disorder affecting hearing and balance, characterized by episodes of vertigo and progressive hearing loss). Katie loves to cook (http://www.self.com/magazine/blogs/selfystars/2011/08/eat-like-a-star-switched-at-bi.html), hike, travel, camp, and spend time with her new puppy (who happens to be deaf!).
