- 04 January 2012 Today’s 10,000 Pound Challenge Tip: Strike starch at dinner. It’s time to wipe out the starchy carbs at dinner—that means starting today, no more bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice with your evening meal. Starchy carbs (even healthier choices like whole-grain pasta and sweet potatoes) are calorie-dense and, let’s face it, a bit addictive—we just love to overeat them! By cutting out these foods completely, your dinner calories—and the numbers on your scale—will drop significantly. To create starch-free dinners, enjoy plenty of lean protein (like skinless poultry, turkey burgers, pork tenderloin, fish, shellfish, and tofu), and pile on heaps of non-starchy veggies (think leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, zucchini, asparagus, sugar snap peas, carrots, peppers, and onions). Easy meal ideas include Grilled Chicken Parmesan (recipe: http://say.ly/npN1dN9) with steamed broccoli, shrimp and vegetable stir fry (hold the rice), and pork tenderloin or baked fish with sautéed spinach. - 24 January 2012 Today’s 25,000 Pound Challenge Tip: Spice up your meals. At this point in the challenge, it’s all about fine-tuning your diet to get every advantage possible—and spicing up your food is one way to get ahead. New research out of Purdue University suggests that adding fiery seasonings and condiments like cayenne pepper, fresh and bottled hot peppers, and hot sauce to meals suppresses your appetite and slightly revs your metabolism. To cash in on these calorie savings, mix spicy ingredients into your food as often as you can in the weeks ahead. Try sprinkling chopped hot peppers into salads, or mixing hot sauce into low-fat mayo or hummus to make a spicy spread for sandwiches. Add minced jalapeno or chipotle peppers to omelets, low-fat chicken or tuna salad, stir fries, and marinades. Bring on the heat!
