Matthew McConaughey Talks Oscar Buzz
Matthew McConaughey is livin' large these days, and he's not afraid to admit it.
Between his gripping new role in HBO's "True Detective" and his Golden Globe-winning (not to mention Academy Award-nominated) performance in "Dallas Buyers Club," Matthew McConaughey sure has a lot to be happy about these days.
In a recent interview with "Variety," the Texas native talked about stepping out of the spotlight before taking on the meatier, low-budget roles that have transformed his career.
“I went to my wife and my agent and said, ‘I’m going to stop for a bit,’” he said. “I’m going to sit back in the shadows. I’m getting into my 40s, a great time for a man. I’ve started a family. I want to take time to laugh and love and enjoy these adventures.”
He heaped praise on his wife, Camilla Alves, describing how supportive she was during that time. "We’re a team," he said. "I know it’s not easy on her, though she does it with aplomb."
Humble as always, Matthew replied in the third person when asked about what he thought about his recent accolades.
“For the next two months, I’m playing the character of Matthew McConaughey, an actor proud of the films he’s been in,” he said. “And if any of those films or his performances are in awards shows, he’s going to go, heart high and head up, and look them all in the eye and say, ‘Damn right this is a great time in my career.’ That’s the role I’m in now. I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.”
It must be that Southern upbringing, because Matthew is a bona fide gent.
