While some of us are cursing Cupid as we search for the perfect awkwardly romantic card this Valentine’s Day, Abigail Spencer is reminding us what really matters in this emotional tribute to her late father.

Yancy Spencer III, known as the father of Gulf Coast surfing, passed away on Valentine’s Day three years ago. “My father died…with my mother’s valentine’s day card in his hands,” Abigail posted on her blog. “He is so present to me that i befall to shock when i realize he is not. that his physical presence is not. it’s a wonder really. and learning to cope or how not to cope and that be okay… has been a process. grief counseling. prayer. friends. writing. yes. valentine’s day has taken on new meaning to me. it has amplified it’s meaning.”

Despite Abigail’s heartbreaking loss, she’s learned the importance of expressing love to those who matter the most: “send a valentine’s day card to the one you love. make one. buy one. send one. let it be known that you love. you never know. you never know.”
