HBO's "True Detective" has been one of the best new TV series in a while. In this crime series, two Louisiana homicide detectives (played by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey) hunt for a serial killer who seems to come out of nowhere. While Harrelson plays the "good" cop who appears to have the straightforward life of a family man, Matthew McConaughey's character Rustin "Rust" Cohle is clearly a tortured soul, and his performance has enthralled audiences. Get to know Detective Cohle with a few of his most bone-chilling quotes so far in the series.

In real-life, Matthew McConaughey can be a pretty laid-back guy.

Here is he lounging with "True Detective" costar Woody Harrelson.

However, his character, Detective Rust Cohle, is rather…complex.

He doesn't play well with others.

He isn't afraid to pass judgment on those around him...

…including his partner.

This quote, if taken out of context, could maybe be a nice thought.

But overall he's pretty dang bleak.

And sometimes his little speeches make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Basically, this is him every time he opens his mouth.

But despite his flaws, there's no one else you'd rather have on the case.

Catch the latest "True Detective" episodes on HBO Sunday nights at 9 p.m. EST.
