Time to pop out the bubbly and put on your party hat—with less than 24 hours left before 2014 arrives, we're taking a look back at the 15 most notable events of 2013.


January – Gerard Piqué and Shakira Welcome Son Milan

Having one famous parent is cool enough, but with a pop star momma and star footballer poppa, Milan really won the gene pool jackpot.

April - Boston Bombing

On April 15, 2013, the nation was shocked when two bombs went off at the Boston Marathon, claiming the lives of three people and injuring over 250 more. Support for the victims was widespread, and memorials dedicated to the lost and wounded were erected in the city and around the world.

June – Supreme Court Overturns DOMA

The movement for marriage equality took a huge step forward on June 26, when the Supreme Court voted to overule DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act), which refused to recognize same-sex marriages.

July – Birth of the Royal Baby

The world waited with bated breath for the birth of the royal baby, son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Prince George Alexander Louis was born on July 22, and is third in line to inherit the throne.

August - Miley Cyrus Twerks at the VMAs

Miley Cyrus’ infamous performance at the 2013 VMAs led to an outpouring of opinions about the pop star and her twerking ways. Bethany Joy Lenz was just one actress who joined in the debate, reminding us in a text post that we were all young once.

August – Tracy Morgan Welcomes Baby Girl      

2013 was a big year for babies. Comedian Tracy Morgan shared a picture of his newborn baby girl, Maven Sonae Morgan, who likes to laugh just as much as her dad.

September – Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick Celebrate 25th Anniversary

Hollywood sweethearts Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on September 4. The two lovebirds shared a lip-locked photo on the streets of Brooklyn to commemorate the milestone.

September – Novak Djokovic Gets Engaged

The world-famous tennis player announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend Jelena Ristic on September 25. Best wishes to the adorable couple!

October – Paul Feig Brings “The Heat”

Over the summer, the “Bridesmaids” and “Freaks and Geeks” director went on the road to promote his new movie starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, “The Heat.” In the fall, he shared his view—and his suits—from stops in Detroit, Chicago, London, and Berlin in this sartorial travel journal.

November – Typhoon Haiyan

Typhoon Haiyan—the deadliest on record—killed over 6,000 people in the Philippines alone. Despite causing damage to large portions of Southeast Asia, the Philippines received the most damage during the week-long storm. Shortly after, a widespread relief effort began, and John Barrowman was just one of the many who supported the cause.

November – Amber Riley Wins “DWTS”

The “Glee” star showed off some killer moves alongside her professional partner Derek Hough on "Dancing With the Stars." Though WhoSayer Bill Engvall put up a strong fight, Amber's increasingly challenging choreography won over fans and the judges alike on the road to the final.

November – Baby Bosh Is Born

NBA player Chris Bosh and his wife Adrienne welcomed their first daughter, Dylan Skye Bosh, early in the morning on Monday, November 4. The proud father shared an adorable picture of him holding his newborn with the caption “Miracles happen everyday and I'm so proud to have seen one today.”

November - Paul Walker’s Death

The “Fast & Furious” star lost his life in a car accident on November 30. Stars like Genesis Rodriguez, Luke Evans, and Beyoncé paid tribute to the late actor, and over 5,000 fans gathered at the site of the crash to honor the car enthusiast’s life.

December – Nelson Mandela’s Death

The world lost a true hero on December 5, when the South African revolutionary and philanthropist Nelson Mandela passed away at the age of 95. Model and activist Naomi Campbell paid tribute to Mandela, her mentor, in a touching post, where she wrote: “It will take time to come to terms with his absence, but I know his energy and impact will forever be in the core of my spirit.”

December – Stan Lee Turns 91

Marvel Comic legend and co-creator of "Spider Man" and "The Hulk" Stan Lee celebrated his 91st birthday this month. He's on the way to reaching 1 million Twitter followers—wish him a happy birthday with a Follow.
