"The Hobbit" Tops U.K. Box Office

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" collected $73 million during its U.S. opening and £9.3 million ($15.2 million) during the UK one.

Luke Evans, the star of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" has plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Firstly, Peter Jackson's second installment of "The Hobbit" film trilogy debuted at No. 1 in the United States, collecting $73 million during its first week at the American box office.

Secondly, "The Desolation of Smaug" got the nod from The Broadcast Film Critics' Association, which nominated the film for four Critics' Choice Movie Awards including Best Art Direction, Special Effects, and Costume Design. 

And now, Evans and his fellow cast and crew have an additional reason to celebrate this holiday season, as "The Hobbit" sequel also dominated the box office during its U.K. debut taking £9.3 million ($15.2 million) during its opening weekend.
