Move over reality shows: musicals are the next big thing in TV. A record number of viewers tuned in to the recent live broadcast of “The Sound of Music” on NBC, making it the biggest non-sports Thursday for the network since the 2009 finale of ER. Clearly, audiences of all ages seem eager to watch classic shows and musicals brought to life in their living room (that, or they just really wanted to see if Carrie Underwood would mess up on live TV).

Luckily, musically inclined viewers won’t have to wait long for another fix—“Psych: The Musical,” a two-hour, all-musical episode of our favorite detective dramady premieres this Sunday on USA. The episode, written and directed by “Psych” creator Steve Franks, is centered on an ill-fated musical showing in Santa Barbara.

We’ve been (for a lack of a better word) psyched to see this buzzed-about episode for a long time now—originally slated to be a part of the show’s sixth season, “Psych: the Musical” experienced writing and production delays that pushed it back a season. It debuted to a lucky group of “Psych” fans at San Diego Comic-Con last July, but will finally be available for wide release on Sunday night. We can’t wait to hear Dulé Hill, James Roday, and Timothy Omundson put their pipes to work.

All-musical episodes of TV shows are a rare breed, and only the most well-written shows can pull them off in style. While we have no doubt that “Psych: The Musical” will do just that, let’s take a look back at some of our favorite musical episodes of all time.

5. Community—“Regional Holiday Music”

The Community writing staff sure is efficient—this all-musical Glee parody does double duty as a Christmas episode.

4. Oz—“Variety”

In this episode of the gritty prison drama, the show’s narrator (Augustus Hill) is replaced with fantasy musical sequences from the inmates. We had our doubts too, but somehow, it just works.

3. Daria—“Daria!”

You’d think that sardonic Daria would be the last person you’d expect to burst into song, but you’d be wrong.

2. That '70s Show—“That '70s Musical”

The musical episode takes place entirely in the imagination of—who else?—Fez.

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer – “Once More, With Feeling”

Buffy and her friends must face uncomfortable truths when a demon curses the residents of Sunnydale to express their real feelings in song.

Watch “Psych: The Musical” on Sunday, December 15 at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST on USA Network.
