Another great comic has departed.

Joan Rivers, who co-hosted the popular E! TV show "Fashion Police" and had been hard at work recently during the MTV Video Music Awards and the Emmys, has passed away. She was 81.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother. She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother," said daughter Melissa Rivers in a written statement.

Joan was undergoing surgery on her vocal cords at a clinic in New York City on August 28 when she stopped breathing and was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she remained in critical condition. "I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother," Melissa told supporters then.

Rest in peace, Joan.

Abigail Spencer - Dear Joan, Thank you for visiting me on the All My Children set when I was 17 years old. It was my first job & you came over to me to say hi because Kathie Lee Gifford told you we were friends. You hugged me. And then whispered in my ear "get out while the gettin' is good". I'll never forget your generous, funny & deeply witty & authentic spirit. #funnygirl #RIPJoanRivers
