Noel Fisher on "TMNT" and Playing the Original "Party Dude"whosay exclusive
The "Shameless" actor talks about his exciting new role as Michelangelo in the hotly-anticipated "TMNT" reboot.
It isn't easy being green—just ask Noel Fisher, who will soon appear on the big screen as one of the most iconic childhood characters of all time in the upcoming reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," opening in theaters this weekend. Noel will play Michelangelo, the nunchaku-swinging, pizza-eating, wise-cracking member of the turtle posse—a.k.a., every '90s kid's cartoon hero.
We were able to chat with Noel about this huge project and the immense challenges that come with playing a CGI character. Keep reading to learn about his filming process, what we can expect from the slick new reboot, and his favorite type of pizza, in our exclusive interview below:
WhoSay: Were you a big TMNT fan before you were up for the part of Michelangelo?
Noel Fisher: I grew up on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I had the toys and the clothes. I spent a large part of my childhood pretending to be a ninja turtle and now I get to do it as an adult!
WhoSay: Did you have a favorite turtle growing up?
Noel: Donatello was my favorite growing up. I think I just loved swinging a big stick around. Nunchucks are a whole lot harder to find when you’re a kid. Can’t just hit a park and make them. You need string and stuff. It’s a way bigger commitment.
WhoSay: How does this adaptation measure up to the original ?
Noel: I think this version is going to give audiences and TMNT fans something they haven’t seen before. The motion capture technology behind this movie really adds a different dimension of life to the turtles and we get to see them do things that are just WAY more badass than we’ve ever seen before. We really tried to keep that fun-loving energy that I think makes TMNT unique while bringing a little more of the ninja element to it. They kick some serious butt this time around.
WhoSay: What was the most challenging part of playing a CGI character?
Noel: Getting used to the motion capture tech was a bit of a learning curve. You have a lot of equipment on you and people running in to switch out batteries and velcro random things onto your leg or back. That being said, once you get past all of that I think an interesting aspect of mocap is that it becomes very similar to acting in any other role. The whole point of the technology is to get as close to a "regular" acting experience as possible and then create these really cool creatures to bring the performance(s) into.
WhoSay: What are your favorite pizza toppings? Do you have a go-to pizza place?
Noel: I go mozzarella and basil any day. I definitely miss NYC pizza. Got a little spoiled while we were shooting out there.
WhoSay: Now, speaking as Michelangelo: What are your favorite pizza toppings?
Noel: M&Ms, pop tarts, and any kind of fish.
WhoSay: Any other favorite childhood cartoons that you'd like to see on the big screen? Any particular character that you'd like to play?
Noel: I loved Dino Riders growing up. I would totally watch a reboot of that! Dudes with lasers riding dinosaurs! What’s not to love?
Thanks, Noel! We can't wait to see you kick some serious butt in "TMNT" this weekend!
