Scarlett Johansson’s “Lucy” Smashes “Hercules” at the Box OfficeBox Office Battle
Raking in $44 million in its opening weekend, the latest Luc Besson action flick dominates the summer competition.
It was a battle of brains vs. brawn at the box office this weekend, with Luc Besson’s “Lucy” going head to head with Brett Rattner’s “Hercules” remake on both films’ opening weekends—and “Lucy,” which stars Scarlett Johansson as a butt-kicking super-intelligent human, got a definitive head start, raking in $44 million in North American theaters.
According to Variety, that’s the third-biggest female-driven opening for an action movie ever.
The “Hercules” reboot, meanwhile, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, brought in approximately $29 million.
In “Lucy,” Johansson plays a young woman who unintentionally gains command over her brain’s full capacity for intelligence—and, subsequently, assumes psychokinetic capabilities.
The actress has gravitated increasingly to action movies in recent years, including “The Avengers,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and “Iron Man 2.” She’s also slated to star in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and there’s been talk about a potential “Black Widow” film down the line. With this weekend’s big opening numbers, who’d say no to that?
