Anyone who looked up at the night sky this weekend witnessed the first supermoon of 2014—one of nature's most showstopping events.

The supermoon occurs when a full or new moon makes its closest approach in orbit to the Earth, which makes the moon appear bigger and up to 30 percent brighter than normal.
