This is the farewell of a true champion.

After scoring a goal during his final international match with Spain's national soccer team, striker David Villa took to WhoSay to thank his fans for their support and express disappointment for not being able to advance to the next round despite La Roja's win 3-0 over Australia Monday.

"Thank you for all the love you have shown me," David wrote. "I'm always so proud to have played and scored for Spain in a World Cup."

David had announced he'd retire from international competitions after the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

He scored his ninth goal in World Cups (and 59th overall during Spain's World Cup match against Australia) and experienced an understandably emotional moment, when he was substituted by coach Vicente Del Bosque after 57 minutes, knowing this was the moment when he'd wear Spain's jersey for the last time.

But, despite having ended his run as player of Spain's national team, David Villa still has plenty to look forward to when it comes to the Beautiful Game. Back in May, David announced he'd become the first player to sign on with the new Major League Soccer team New York City that will debut in March 2015. In the meantime, David will play in the Australian A-League for Melbourne City.

Adios and hola, David! We look forward to seeing you play in New York City!
