Hips don't lie—and neither does giving back.

Colombian singer Shakira was honored on Saturday night with the Hero Award at the 2014 Radio Music Awards

"When I was growing up, not everything was a bed of roses for me," an excited and emotional Shakira said upon accepting her award. "But, education brought me where I am today," she added as the crowd cheered.

The "Hips Don't Lie" singer was honored with the Radio Disney Music Hero Award for the work of her foundation Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet), which she founded when she was only 18 to help underprivileged kids get an education. "I see how education really makes an impact on the kids who receive it, their families, communities and society,"Shakira says in the segment's introductory video.

Thanks to Pies Descalzos, underprivileged children in Colombia and other parts of the world have first-time access to playgrounds, libraries, textbooks, nutritious meals, and computers. "There should be education for rich and for poor. For everybody. Education is not a luxury. It should be a right," explains Shakira.
