Five Fearless Questions for Slash

The Guns N' Roses guitarist answers questions about his new horror flick.

Oct 4, 2013 | 10:30 AM

Slash is a legendary guitarist, but he lent more than just his axe to "Nothing Left to Fear." Releasing in theaters tonight, this horror film, telling the story of a haunted Kansas town, is Slash's pet project. He co-produced the film and soundtrack, keeping a close eye on every step of the process. Slash took time to answer a few of our questions about his love of scary movies and the inspiration for the film's music.

WhoSay: What is it about horror films that draws you to them?

Slash: I’m not entirely sure how it all started. I have been intrigued by monster/horror/sci-fi for as long as I can remember. But I would have to say I’m attracted to the dark imagery of horror, and I love the thrill of suspense. I love memorable villains, and I love the imagination of horror make-up and other special effects.

WhoSay: You mention memorable villains. Which horror villain stuck with you as a kid?

Slash: It wasn’t actually horror, but he was horrible: the child catcher in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”

WhoSay: How did the film influence the music, and vice versa?

Slash: The music was inspired by the script and director, Anthony Leonardi III, and his initial storyboards. Then, by actual dailies [film from the day’s shoot].

WhoSay: Is the soundtrack made up of all fresh ideas, or does it stem from ideas you've had for a while?

Slash: The soundtrack is completely inspired by the story/film, and all written in tandem with its production.

WhoSay: Quick word association:

The Munsters—The most perfect horror parody every made.

Vincent Price—My all-time favorite horror actor and narrator.

"Breaking Bad"—Can’t watch. I’m a little bit sensitive to the subject matter. :)
