If you're a fan of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" (and who isn't?!), we've got some exciting news for you: a live-action adaptation is currently in the works.

But be warned—you might not get the happy ending you expect. Sofia Coppola’s live-action rendition of “The Little Mermaid” stays truer to the dark undertones of the Hans Christina Anderson classic, which fits in nicely with the moodiness of her typical work (“Lost in Translation,” “The Virgin Suicides,” and “The Bling Ring”).

The film will be written by Caroline Thompson, who has created blockbusters such as “Edward Scissorhands,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and “The Corpse Bride.” And while Coppola and Univeral/Working Title are still brainstorming on a title, sources report that they intend to move along the filming process quickly.
